My Current Food Photography Gear

I am often asked what camera and lens I use for my food photography. This post will cover all my current food photography gear. However, the camera won’t make you a better photographer. Buy what you can afford and practice.

Camera Bodies

Canon 80d – This was my first DSLR purchase. My husband had purchased a Canon Rebel T2i which I used briefly before purchasing my own. I still use this camera as my secondary camera and highly recommend it or the newer 90d. One of my favorite features of this camera is the articulating screen which makes shooting overhead shots easier. Note: buy just the camera body and purchase a more suitable food photography lens.

Canon 5D Mark IV – When I purchased the Canon 80d I had been eying a full-frame camera but couldn’t justify the price. Once I began to consider my food photography more than just a hobby, I decided it was worth the purchase. A good photographer will still be a good photographer regardless of the equipment. Buy what you can afford and practice.

Camera Lenses

Canon 50mm f/1.8 – This was the first lens that I purchased. It is one of the cheapest lenses in Canon’s line and is super versatile. Hence why it is called the nifty-fifty. I highly recommend this lens if you are just starting out.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L – When I purchased this lens I really wanted a zoom lens that would work for both travel and food photography. I use it quite a bit in my food photography because of the zoom. It is a great lens and I like having the image stabilization which is great when shooting off tripod.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L – I rented and tested this lens before buying which is something I highly recommend for more expensive lenses. It is an amazing lens for macro photography but not ideal for overhead shots. I often use it as a secondary lens when I want to capture crisp, close-up images.

Canon 17-40mm f.4L – I purchased this lens when I purchased my 5D because it was on sale for half-price and I really wanted a super wide-angle lens with a shorter focusing distance. Truth be told what I really wanted was the Canon EF 16-35 mm f/2.8L but the 17-40 ended up being about 25% the cost. I really like having it for those wider table shots that are sometimes difficult with my other lenses. It is also lighter so it is a great travel lens.

What’s currently on my lens wishlist? Do I need more lenses? No, I seriously have all the lenses I really need but that doesn’t mean I don’t want for more. I would love to upgrade my 50mm and get a 35mm. I have shot with a 35mm and love how it captures images while in restaurants or outdoors.

Manfrotto Travel Befree Live – This was a tripod that my husband purchased years ago and I used it until I purchased my 5D. This tripod is great as a lightweight travel tripod but can only handle up to 8 pounds which means for a heavier camera and lens this is not ideal. It also doesn’t have a horizontal column to allow you to shoot overhead shots. It does have a fluid video head which can make shooting video footage easier.

Manfrotto 055 with Horizontal Column and XPRO ball head – I did a ton of research before purchasing this tripod. I needed a tripod that could support my heavier 5D and the heavier lenses but I also wanted one that could shoot overhead shots. I purchased the aluminum version since it is cheaper and for food photography, I felt like the carbon fiber was overkill. Along with the tripod, I also purchased the XPRO ball head which I love. It is easy to switch between shooting landscape and portrait.

C-Stand – I love my Manfrotto but recently upgraded to a c-stand for overhead shots. It’s a beast and not easy to store but I have a second bedroom that I shoot out of so I have space. To attach my camera I purchased this adapter and monopod head which uses the same base plate as my Manfrotto ball head. I can’t take credit for this setup. I found it after watching one of Joanie Simon’s Bite Shot videos.

Artificial Lighting

Godox TT685S – I am still working on improving my artificial lighting and having been using this flash and trigger. I recently signed up for Joanie Simon’s Artificial Academy to improve my artificial lighting skills so I can shoot at any time day or night.

In addition to the flash and trigger this is some of the other lightening equipment that I use.

Light Stands – I use these for both my Speedlight but also to as a stand for my diffuser.
Diffuser – These come in different sizes and I own both a small and larger set.
Godox Soft Box with Bowens Mount – I like the size of this one.
Godox S-type Bowens Mount – This lets me mount my flash with the softbox but I will be able to use it if I transition to a monolight or continuous light.

Other Accessories

These are some other equipment that I own and use.

Remote Trigger – This one is really cheap and I have had no problems with it.
Rechargeable Batteries – I have tried many different brands and these are the best.
