A couple of weekends ago I had the exciting opportunity to takeover Yelp San Antonio’s Instagram account. The moment I was asked I instantly knew where I wanted to go but as this was my first takeover I agonized for weeks over every detail. I was so grateful for the support from my husband and my closest foodie friends.
Our first stop was Bird Bakery – because as the saying goes life is short, eat dessert first! Bird is my go-to neighborhood bakery but honestly, it is more than a bakery. Their breakfast menu includes quiches, pop-overs, sandwiches, oatmeal, & granola, and for lunch, you can grab a sandwich, soup, or salad.
For the remainder of my takeover, we headed over to some of my favorite spots in the Eastside neighborhood of Dignowity Hill. Slowly, this side of San Antonio is growing and finding its own foodie niche that includes good homestyle food as well as a handful of beer gardens that can quench your thirst. When your friends are foodies it can be difficult to find places they have never been but I scored in 3 of my 4 Eastside locations. That’s a passing score, right?
1st Eastside Stop:
Estate Coffee opened in April 2016 and instantly became my favorite coffee shop in San Antonio so of course, it had to be one of my stops on my takeover. They roast their beans in-house and make not only a killer latte but also serve up drinks like Popfogatos (vanilla, chocolate, or horchata paleta dunked in a double espresso).
2nd Eastside Stop:
Dignowity Meats has been open for several years and they are not your typical Texas BBQ establishment. Rather they offer up hand-crafted smoked meat sandwiches, KC brisket burnt ends (my personal fave), buttermilk fried chicken, loaded baked potatoes, and Digonowity pie which is corn chips topped with sharp cheddar mac, burnt ends, sour cream, cheddar, green onions, and jalapenos.
3rd Eastside Stop:
Alamo Beer Co is a beer hall located under the historic Hay Street Bridge, which is worthy of its own blog post. The beer hall has a large indoor and outdoor space and on the weekend is usually hosting a local event.
4th Eastside Stop:
Bexar Pub opened early this year and is home to the Folc Burger Texas Monthly’s 2016 Best Burger in Texas. It has a small inside space that includes a full kitchen and an outside space with TVs so you don’t miss your favorite sports team. If you don’t pay attention you might miss it so and that would be a shame.
